O ct 1 99 8 BeppoSAX Observations of the BL Lac Object Mkn 501 in an Intermediate State

چکیده
The BL Lac object Mkn 501 was observed with the BeppoSAX satellite at three epochs in April-May 1998, simultaneously with the Whipple and HEGRA Cherenkov telescopes. The X-ray spectrum is well detected up to 70 keV and it exhibits, at all epochs, a continuous curvature, which is here modeled with three power-laws of increasingly steeper index at larger energies. In the νF ν representation the spectrum exhibits a peak at ∼ 20 keV, which is interpreted as the maximum of the synchrotron emission. This implies that the synchrotron peak energy has lowered by an order of magnitude with respect to the powerful X-ray outburst observed in April 1997. The simultaneous TeV flux was comparable to the lowest levels observed for Mkn 501, possibly suggesting that the peak of the inverse Compton radiation had also shifted toward lower energies.

We present here two epochs of Space VLBI Observations at 18 cm of the BL-Lac type object Mkn 501. Thanks to the high resolution of these new data we have found that the inner jet is centrally brightened at its beginning but becomes extended and limb brightened at ∼ 8 mas from the core. Moreover a comparison between the two epochs shows the presence of a possible proper motion with apparent velo...

The BL Lac object Mkn 501, one of the only three extragalactic sources (with Mkn 421 and 1ES 2344+514) so far detected at TeV energies, was observed with the BeppoSAX satellite on 7, 11, and 16 April 1997 during a phase of high activity at TeV energies, as monitored with the Whipple, HEGRA and CAT Cherenkov telescopes. Over the whole 0.1-200 keV range the spectrum was exceptionally hard (α ≤ 1,...

The recent HEGRA observations of the blazar Mkn 501 show strong curvature in the very high energy γ-ray spectrum. Applying the γ-ray opacity derived from an empirically based model of the intergalactic infrared background radiation field (IIRF), to these observations, we find that the intrinsic spectrum of this source is consistent with a power-law: dNγ/dE ∝ E −α with α = 2.00 ± 0.03 over the r...

We present the results of a spectral and temporal study of the complete set of BeppoSAX NFI (11) and WFC (71) observations of the BL Lac object Mkn 501. The WFC 2–28 keV data, reported here for the first time, were collected over a period of about five years, from September 1996 to October 2001. These observations, although not evenly distributed, show that Mkn 501, after going through a very a...

BeppoSAX observations of Mkn501 in April 1997 (Pian et al. 1998), have revealed an extraordinary X–ray emission from this BL Lac object, during a phase of high activity at TeV energies, as monitored with the Whipple, HEGRA and CAT Cerenkov telescopes. The 0.1–200 keV spectrum was hard, and the X–ray power output peaked at or above 100 keV, 2 or 3 orders of magnitude more than what indicated by ...
